Chapter 1: Can Photography change the World

I believe that photojournalism can help change a small part of the world but not too much. A photo of a man standing in front of tanks, shows his bravery to stand for what he is protesting for. We as people will see that and some will say he had lost his mind for not moving but others will state that we should start fighting and standing for what we believe in and make the change that need to happen. According to Jonathan Klein of Getty Images “images themselves do not change the world, images have provoked reactions inpeople and those reactions have caused change to happen.”

Photography is a source of media and can reach out the across the world. People use the media to cover news and entertainment. You can take a photo that is worth a thousand words and show it to the world but the government or media companies can also have a say on the photo if they want it to be publish or not. As you might not know, there are restriction on what people can publish as a photo. Six companies control 90% of the media in the world. Frugal says it "the illusionof choice,".

Alexander Zemlianichenko took a photo of Boris Yeltsin dancing at a rock concert which shown the Russians public that he was healthful and ready to serve his country as president again in the 1996 elections. According to the first video “It had a major hand in tipping the election in Yeltsin favor”.

Eros Hoagland is a war photojournalist. He doesn’t believe that his photos can change the world. "My pictures and the pictures of mycolleagues, they don't really change anything. So let's not pretend like theydo. You want to help people? Become a doctor and work in some poor neighborhoodwhere people can't afford health care. That's how you help people."  Sometimes it takes more than photos to make a change. You have to go out in the world and make that change.
