Trials and Triumphs

Society has the standard for women on a higher platform than men in workforces. A women could have the same position or high job title as a man but the salaries between the two could differ. According to a 2008 study by the U.S. Department of Labor, women earn on average 80 percent of what men earn. If caught the employer could be sued or required to pay fines since women are protected under The Equal Pay Act of 1963. Women tend to have to work harder then men to receive managerial status. Nordell stated, "I believe that women photojournalists along with women in many different professions have encountered barriers unlike any of there male counter parts have endured." The federal law enforces that employment need to be equal to ensure that a woman will get the same equal treatment as a man.

According to Professor Nordell, Marion Post Walcott " had gotten a job at the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, however, the male photographers weren't welcoming, apparently, they urinated in her photography chemicals, threw spitballs at her, and extinguished cigarettes in her developing trays." In the end, women should be treated with the same fairness and respect as men because as of now, men and women are are separate yet still unequal.

IIse Bing was born March 23, 1899 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. She was a German photographer known for her works with the lightweight 35mm Leica camera. Bing went to the University of Frankfurt in 1920 and studied math and physics. She changed her course of study to art history, however, and began writing a doctorate in 1924 on German Neoclassicist architect Friedrich Gilly. She got her first interest in photography in 1928 when she bought a Voigtlander large format camera to take photos to illustrate her thesis. A year later she started doing freelancing photography for the Frankfurt newspapers.

Bing met architect Mart Stam who was appointed Chief Architect of a major construction project (Das Neue Frankfurt). Bing was responsible for documenting and recording the project. “Bing finally gave up her thesis in the summer of 1929 to concentrate on photography - a rather shocking decision for a woman of her background that astonished her family”. She later moved to Paris to be part of the art world. In 1932 she done work for Le Monde Illustre and L’illustration and fashion photography for Paris Vogue and Marchal.Monde Illustre and L’illustration and fashion photography for Paris Vogue and Marchal. She took pictures of unusual angles of shoes and hats which made her photos unique. Bing first exhibition of work was of a dancer at the Moulin Rouge. She was named the Queen of the Leica at the 26th Salon International Art Photographic. Bing best known works was a self-portrait of herself holding a Leica. “In 1936 van Loon arranged for Bing to visit the United States when she had her first solo exhibition opened at the June Rhodes Gallery in New York City”.

Is the image black & white or Color?
The image I chose is in black and white. The image was taken when color photography was around so the photographer had a choice to take the picture in black and white. Black and photos has more of a dramatic feeling to the images then color images.

Contrast Appropriate
The contrast in the photo is low. There are dark areas all over the photo. There isn’t any bright or color spots in the photo. The feeling the images gives off is a dark and lonely vibe.

Obvious main subject, about ¼ to 2/3 of image area
I believe the main subject of the image is the buildings, reflecting in the water. The puddle of water is also center in the photo so it brings our eyes to the water first. There isn’t much going on the image so the photo is simple.

I chose this images because of the reflection of the building in the water. Instead of taking the picture of the building, the photography tried something different. It’s a simple picture but the way the photographer took the photo made the picture take out.

In or out of focus
There is a sharpness shot on the subject of the image which is the gorilla carrying it child on the back. You can see the pattern of fur on the gorilla. The subject is very focus on. The back of the photo has a blur so you can’t see the forest of area.

Subject Expression
The subject in the photo look relax and calm. It has a warm mood to the image. The shot taken was candid. The subject had no knowledge and wasn’t paying any attention to the photographer.

Texture
The texture of the photo environment is a foggy scene. It doesn’t give off much details in the
background so the mind focus of the images brings you the gorilla.

I chose this photo because it bought a happy vibe to me when looking at it. I think it’s a powerful images of the gorilla taking care of it kid and it’s only subject in the images.

Rule of Thirds
The photographer avoids placing the image in the center of the photo. The main subject of the photo is off center to the side of the image. If you divide the photo in halves, the subject will be in the outer half. The other half will have the clouds and sun the images.

Quality of Light
The only light in the photo is coming from the sun. The sun light is reflecting off the subject mirrors.

Use of lines
Instead of straight lines being used at the subject, there are curves. We follow the lines with our eyes.

I chose this picture because I thought it was unique. I couldn’t tell what the subject is in the picture. It’s hard to tell what the subject is because it’s like a close up photo and doesn’t give off a lot of details.

Chapter 4

Blogs have changed the game when it comes to giving people information about things. They have become more popular over the years and it seems that they are the next main spot to find information other than the newspaper. Being that a blog is usually a web page or website, it is used to discuss or inform people using a conversational or informal style. It can be operated by a range of people from a small group to singe person. Being that they were mostly operated by a single person until about 2009 there would only be one voice and usually on topic of discussion. Nowadays blogs have multiple authors which create a blog with different voices and opinions giving the reader more content. Twitter for example is a network allowing people to voicing what they have to say whether fact or opinion.

The process of blogs has affected photojournalism and photojournalist in a positive light. Blogs can be used as a media outlet to reach out to reader from all around the world. It’s a instant social media technology process for help explain news in a different way, using photojournalism. People use blogs to post all different type of things such as, showing people their amazing photo they took or telling a story around a photo. As Professor Nordell says in his video, “there is a declining skill set that is needed to get a decent picture, and so it has really effected the market for photojournalism.”

Comparing a blog and a 35mm Leica is two different technologies that help each other. When creating a blog you can post multiple photos without having a limit. When using a camera like the 35mm Leica you have a limit to photos being taken. Professor Nordell, " the Leica camera was made in Germany...used very small 35 mm film, so with one roll of film you could take 24 or 36 pictures." You would be only be able to take a limit 36 photos. It can cause a problem for some photographer who was at a Olympics games to say and you need to take photos constantly. Being able to post in moment is a great way to reach out to the world. As Professor Nordell said, "it's all about the web and what you can show on the web."

The rise of multimedia has also allowed for more than just photojournalists to share their images and stories with the world. It allows us to interact with different cultures around the world. As newspapers only allow certain photos to be posted to the society and takes a timely matter, people can use different social media to reach out to the world and blogging became very popular. Newspapers and magazine are still very popular but it doesn’t tell the whole story of photos.

The Art of Photojournalism

Taken: 1840

Is the image black & white or color?

The photo was taken in black and white. The photography didn’t have the choice to take it in color because the technology didn’t exist yet. The photo was also in the era where a lot of people had self-portraits of themselves.

Use of shadows

The is some shadow use in the photo. I think it’s very unique has one of the photo is all shadow and the other side is bright. The photo can have a lot of different meaning to it such as Christianity and darkness vs light.

Subject’s Expression

The subject in the photo seem very relax and somewhat happy. In the photo it looks like maybe she is sitting down in a chair with a good straight up posture. Her face doesn’t show much
emotions but it looks like she has a little glance on her face with a smile.

Why I chose this photo?

It was pretty hard finding a photo that stood out to me. A lot of the photos was pretty simple and almost the same. I chose this one because I like how you couldn’t really tell her facial emotions but seems she seems happy. I always find it unique how the shadows were use in the photo. Also her brother took the photo and he is a famous photography.

In or out of focus

The focus of the photo seems to be the guy or the background of the photo in the back with the dude In the front out of focus. Maybe while the photo was being taken, the dude ran by which causes him to be out of focus. There is still a lot detail in this photo, so you can’t really care what was the main focus of the picture.

Texture

The texture of the photo is wet. The ground is full of water with a person running over but the photography was able to catch the person in the air. The water is use as a reflected.

Is the image black & white or color?

The photo is in black and white. I think the photography had the option to choose black and white and he chose it, to probably make the photo more dramatic.

Why I chose the Photo?

I chose this photo because there isn't just one focus subject. There is a lot going on in the photo. The picture gives off different feeling of happy and sad. I will say it happy cause of the person running over the water and sad cause usually a lot of black and white photos are dramatic.

Rule of thirds

The photo main focus is to the right of the picture with the lighting striking down. I think it was a great way how he was able to catch the lightning in that angle. Even if the lightning was striking down in the middle of the photo it will still be a great shoot.

Keep it Simple

The Photo is very simple. The main focus is the lightning. It’s a photo of a tornado forming and lightning striking down out of the tornado in the middle of a country like place. Sometimes simple is better.

Contrast Appropriate

The contrast is high. There is bright and some dark colors in the photo. It is half and half and very unique how the photography to took the pictures. Half of the sky is blue and the other side is pink. The lighting is very good.

Why I chose this photo?

I chose this photo because I like how the sky is split in half with blue and pink coloring. I like the coloring in this photo and how the lightning is coming
